Resolved Question: East Coast summer road trip --- Budget and sightseeing help?

My boyfriend and I are planning a road trip for this summer from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Aiken, South Carolina to visit a friend. It's about 1000 miles total. Only about a 16Hour trip continuously but granted I can get the time off work the entire trip there and back will be between a week and two weeks long so that we can really enjoy it. I'm wondering how much money we should plan on spending on gas/tolls/lodging/food on the way there and back. For lodging we'll be doing as much camping as possible, and once we get there we have a free place to stay. We'll be eating as little as possible, because our budget will be as SMALL as possible. We have a camping stove to cook our own food, do you think that would be a good idea? Or just a hassle? We'll be taking a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, if anyone knows/cares what that baby would approximately get for MPG and felt like factoring that in. Also, any must see stops along the way? Preferably free or really cheap. We like nature a lot so just some beautiful views we've gotta stop for would be appreciated. Any other advice? Anything else I should take into account? I'm new to this, I've never done a real long road trip before and I'm looking forward to it but also nervous for it too!!

I am going to be attending recruiter school at FT Jackson South Carolina. I am unsure if I will be receiving Per Diem, but assume not since meals are provided. I was wondering when i fill out a travel voucher, if i can include the following: daily commute (10-15 miles from school house to lodging) travel to and from my Home of record to airport, ATM fees, Laundry expenses, and anything else that may help. Please any and all info will be appreciated. I want to ensure that I am receiving everything that I am entittled to.

Resolved Question: Where and how should I plan a road trip for an eighteen year old and two seventeen year olds?

My friends and I want to take a road trip during our senior year spring break. We live in Illinois, and they are not allowed to go anywhere that is a two day drive, any big tourist attractions, or out of the country, so Canada, driving to California, and Disney World are all no-gos. They are allowed to fly, so we could fly to California. I was wondering what kind of problems we would run into with booking hotels. Our two ideas are flying to California, where my 21 year old brother lives (I'm sure we could book a hotel under his name) or drive to South Carolina, where we still run into the lodging problem. Any suggestions for alternate vacation destinations would be helpful too.

Voting Question: Moving car coast-to-coast - Options/Ideas?

We have hired a trucking broker (car transport company) to move our car from Fremont, CA (near San Francisco/Oakland) to Greenville, South Carolina. We have been waiting over 1.5 weeks for the movement of the car. We have also placed a premium bid to be the highest bid in the system for that area to push for the car getting picked up. Yet, it is not being moved and we need to move the car here over the next week. The car transport company/broker has been very professional. They are considered a larger player and have high ratings on the reviews. Yet, we are not getting results. We have done this in the past and had no problem (about 3 years ago). So I wanted to put the question out there to see if anyone has any better ideas or different approach. Right now we are considering: 1) Using another broker. But since it seems they all work through the same system to find the trucks, we do not think it would make much of a difference. Does anyone understand how this works and would it make a difference to go with another broker? 2) Look at hiring a driver company to bring the car over. But not sure on the timeline of doing that, cost, and reliability of drivers. 3) Flying out there myself and driving it back. But it would be a long and expensive drive (with plane ticket, gas, lodging, and food). 4) Just keep waiting and working with the existing broker. Any ideas, recommendations, or suggestions would be greatly welcome from people that have experience getting cars moved throughout the country. Thank you.

Resolved Question: Are more employers using e-verify? Does this mean it is working?

More employers turning to the federal program they hope will help them avoid hiring illegal immigrants. By Franco Ordoñez fordonez@charlotteobserver.com Posted: Wednesday, May. 13, 2009 Mandi Bickes of ResourceMFG interviews a client. The company has enrolled in E-Verify. T. ORTEGA GAINES – OGAINES@CHARLOTTEOBSERVER.COM More Information This Land: Which companies are checking? A worn red, white and blue sign taped to the front door of ResourceMFG warns potential hires that the recruiter uses a federal program to root out illegal immigrants. Branch manager Tamara Mantooth put the sign up about two months ago when she noticed that nearly half the company's applicants presented questionable IDs. “It was interesting,” she said. “After we put the sign up, some people would come up to the door, look at the sign and then turn away.” Her company is one of a growing number in North Carolina and across the country enrolling in E-Verify, a once-obscure program run by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. Critics say it's a flawed and expensive program that doesn't deter illegal immigration. But as the Obama administration warns that it will focus on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, N.C. firms are choosing the free and voluntary program in record numbers. In the past two years, the number of enrolled N.C. companies has increased by more than 700percent to 2,567. Local participants include Bank of America, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and the Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge. Last year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, made more than 6,000 workplace arrests; 135 were employers and managers. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a Senate hearing last week that ICE can do better. “Active enforcement of our immigration laws must address not just the illegal workers themselves,” she said, “but also the employers who hire illegal labor and fuel the phenomenon of illegal immigration into the United States.” Worried about raids Gilberto Bergman, president of Bergman Brothers Staffing of Charlotte, says companies can no longer claim they didn't know they hired workers using fake IDs. He said companies are using E-Verify to protect themselves in the event of raids or investigations. Bergman cited an October raid of an N.C.-based House of Raeford Farms plant in Greenville, S.C. More than 300 workers were detained. The plant manager, the human resource manager and about a dozen supervisors were arrested on immigration charges.“When you actually hear that they're going to go ahead and prosecute, take to court the people who actually did the hiring, that's a big concern for HR people,” he said. “Employers are paying a lot more attention to who they are hiring, especially here in the Carolinas,” A 2006 Observer investigation found illegal immigrants working for major N.C. road-building companies using Social Security numbers that were fake, stolen or belonging to dead people. Using payroll records from contractors, including Rea Contracting of Charlotte, the newspaper found questionable Social Security numbers for a third of 85 workers. Rea is now using E-Verify, according to ICE. Advocates, critics E-Verify was first tested in 1997 so employers could compare employment forms to Social Security and immigration records. Participation nationally has been expanding at a rate of about 1,000 new employers a week, Napolitano said. More than 122,000 employers are enrolled, nearly five times more than in 2007. Last year, President Bush signed an order requiring companies that do business with the federal government to use E-Verify. South Carolina, Arizona and Mississippi require all employers to use E-Verify, according to the National Immigration Law Center. North Carolina passed a law in 2006 requiring that all state employees, including those at universities, be vetted by E-Verify. Opponents claim the program does not effectively reduce illegal immigrants. The Immigration Policy Center, a pro-immigrant research group, says E-Verify ensnares American job seekers in database errors, adds to employers' costs and “does not actually prevent undocumented immigrants from getting jobs.” The Congressional Budget Office estimated that expanding the federal verification program could cost $17billion over the next 10 years. But Napolitano endorses E-Verify, saying ICE has fixed many of its shortcomings. Mantooth said using the program is a business advantage. Companies don't want to risk paying for expensive training only to find out the worker is in the country illegally. “I don't understand why anyone would not take advantage of this,” she said. “We don't want a reputation as a company that would place workers who were not eligible to work in the United States.” http://www.charlotteobserver.com/597/story/721012.html _________________

Resolved Question: North Carolina Skiing/Snowboarding?

I actually have a few question about North Carolina skiing. Im from south Florida so I pretty much know nothing, but Im planning a trip to visit a family member in mid-December, about 30 minutes outside Raleigh. So my questions are.. 1. How is the snow in December? I realize that its a bit early in the season but is it good enough to ski/snowboard in the mountains? 2. What ski lodges would you recommend? I won't be needing an overnight place just a place I can go ski/snowboard for the day then return home at night. I would prefer a place that serves food and hot chocolate/coffee though. 3. How far is the nearest ski lodge to Raleigh? Thank you so so much!

Voting Question: Suggestion of first bow?

Now that I have a good idea of which rifle calibers and companies to look at and consider, what would you suggest as my first bow? Not looking to make a purchase right now, just looking for something that can kill fairly good-sized deer without killing my arm, hahaha! Any suggestions of equipment or perhaps products that have brought great success. I ask these questions of which rifle and bow because recently, I visited mt great uncle's hunting lodge in South Carolina. As soon as I saw the lodge with my own eyes, the cat was out of the bag; it was something I knew I wanted to do.

Resolved Question: Suggestions of first gun?

What do you think would be a good, quality first for me to purchase? I've just started to take an interest in the sport and today (10/18), I visited the Tampa Gun Show. I'm about 5'10", 180# and looking for a reliable gun to start with; something that can be used for whitetail in a South Carolina lodge about 1/2 hour outside of Fairfax. Any thoughts or suggestions? Also, please explain the concealed weapons licesnce in Florida to me. Thanks! My pop thinks I should start off w/ a shotgun, so I can get used to the recoil of the gun. Again, looking for a quality gun that's not too expensive...
