Giovanni da Verrazano, a Florentine navigator in the service of France, visited the Narragansett Bay of Rhode Island in 1524; however, it wasn't until 1636 that the first permanent white settlement was founded. Roger Williams, a religious refugee from Massachusetts, bought land at Providence from the Narragansetts. Williams fled what he considered puritanical tyranny and established a policy of religious and political freedom in his new settlement. Soon others began similar communities, and in 1663, King Charles II granted them a royal charter, officially creating the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

Although the smallest state in the nation and smaller than many of the counties in the United States, Rhode Island is rich in American tradition. It is a state of firsts. Rhode Islanders were among the first colonists to take action against the British, attacking British vessels in its waters.

On May 4, 1776, the state was the first to proclaim independence from Great Britain, two months before the Declaration of Independence was signed. In 1790, Samuel Slater's mill in Pawtucket became America's first successful water-powered cotton mill, and in 1876, polo was played for the first time in the United States in Newport.

Rhode Island has a tradition of manufacturing skill. The state produces machine tools, electronic equipment, plastics, textiles, jewelry, toys, and boats. The famous Rhode Island Red Hen was developed by farmers in Little Compton. Rhode Island is also for those who follow the sea. With more than 400 miles of coastline, visitors can swim, sail, fish, or relax in the many resort areas.

  • The large number of public beaches and piers in Rhode Island provide ample water access for fishing, sailing, swimming, boating and whale watching. Inland recreation includes hiking, biking and camping. During the winter months many state parks are open for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Providence underwent a major facelift in the 1990s that has resulted in the renaissance of Rhode Island’s capital city. The revitalisation project included the rerouting of two rivers and the building of beautifully landscaped pedestrian walkways and Venetian-style footbridges. At the hub of the project is Waterplace Park, a 1.6 hectare (4 acre) urban park that surrounds a tidal basin. The East Side is filled with many fine restored homes, and Brown University includes several 18th-century buildings. The Museum of Natural History and Planetarium is one of a kind in the State, with collections containing over 24,000 archaeological and ethnographic specimens, with the focus on Native American and Pacific Island heritage.

Water-related activities, hiking, riding, various other sports, picnicking, and visitor centers, as well as camping, are available in many state parks. Most are open sunrise to sunset. No pets allowed. No license is necessary for recreational saltwater game fishing. Freshwater fishing license: nonresident, $31; three-day tourists' fee, $16. Both largemouth bass and northern pike can be found in Worden Pond; trout can be found in Wood River. Hunting license: nonresident, $41. Resident licenses and regulations may be obtained at city and town clerks' offices and at most sporting goods shops.

The weather in Rhode Island is more moderate than in other parts of New England. Breezes off Narragansett Bay make summer humidity bearable and winter temperatures less bitter than elsewhere in the region.
