Sandusky Lodging in a Nutshell

by Ron Callari

Sandusky article by American Demographics rated Sandusky 6th as one of the top 10 "best small cities in the US." Located on the shores of Lake Erie, Sandusky, Ohio, has more than 22 miles of shoreline within the city limits.

This quaint town is home to an impressive collection of historical Midwest architecture. Sandusky was founded in 1818 and attracted German and Irish stonecutters. The architecture reflects the cultures from which it came, and many of the earliest buildings in Sandusky were carved from limestone which is still prevalent throughout town. Historical downtown is testimony to this period. Later (late 1800s), the sandy beaches on Lake Erie made it a popular vacation destination.

Sandusky is a Great Lakes port community and the county seat of Erie County with an estimated population of 30,000 and total outlying population of 112,000 within a 15-mile radius. Conveniently located between Cleveland and Toledo, Sandusky offers small-town living with easy access to both of these major urban areas.

Its shoreline stretches 22 miles, and the city is home to Cedar Point Amusement Park, voted the "Best Amusement Park in the World” for the fourth year in a row by Amusement Today. With over 3.5 million visitors, Cedar Point offers rides and attractions for visitors of all ages. Home to the highly acclaimed Millennium Force rollercoaster, the Park holds the Guiness Book of World Records for the tallest, fastest, and steepest roller coaster.

The waters of Lake Erie provide a paradise for fishermen. Take a fishing charter, launch your own boat or fish at one of the many public fishing locations. Daily fishing reports are available at the Web site: www.dnr.state.oh.us/odnr/wildlife/fishing/ Sandusky is still improving its quality of life. Witness its downtown renaissance on your next visit where exciting area attractions, distinctive historic architecture, well-manicured parks and friendly down-home atmosphere offer a charm that makes Sandusky a welcoming respite, with lots to do.
